It's shortness makes it easy for me to remember :) Passersby here is akin to non-attachment, but does not mean ignoring or lacking compassion for the suffering of the world. It simply means remembering that you are <em>in</em> the world but not <em>of</em> the world. A passerby is not identified with this world, but rather with Spirit. “Be Passersby” is saying 42 of Jesus in the book of Thomas. Dying daily to live fully was definitely his message, but in the good Samaritan story passersby are those who fail to be present to suffering & fail to love.
